The Con-Trex BEA program for the elderly
(to inprove balance and reduce the risk of falls)
In our population, older people have the highest rate of disability. About 1 of 5 people aged 65 years and older have disabilities that restrict daily activities substantially. A particular problem is the high risk of falls.
The CON-TREX Biomechanical Evaluation of Articulations of Elderly people (BEA) testing and training program first tests, then trains all major muscle groups in the body, ensure movements within a full range of motion and includes balance training in terms of ADL (Activities of Daily Living) movement patterns.
By using this program it is possible to detect, diminish and/or avoid deficiencies of the musculoskeletal system. A regular strength training program can reverse sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and muscle weakness in older people, enhance posture, improve balance and coordination, heighten self-esteem and increase functional abilities. Thus it helps to preserve and re-establish personal independence.
The time frame sees a training of twelve weeks with increasing intensity. It starts with a test, an intermediate test is then again made in week 06, followed by a third test (control) in week 12. Since the level achieved after 12 weeks is only temporary, the test in week 12 is not to be considered as a final test, but as an intermediate test.
It is strongly recommended to maintain regular training intervals of at least one training per week, with occasional tests (to be made in periods of three to six months).
The CON-TREX BEA program forms a standard protocol within the CON-TREX human kinetics software, and can thus be offered by any user of CON-TREX biomechanical test- and training systems!
This program was initiated by our much appreciated mexican distributor TLM on behalf of the Systema Nacional Para el Desarollo Integral de la Familia, Mexico (= DIF). DIF is a joint venture of public, social and private institutions, entrusted with the development of the family, of the protection of childhood and to provide services in social security, under the guidance of the National System of Social Security.
